Our Heavy-Duty Butt Hinges Include the Following:
- For optimal opening and closing of doors or cabinets, our offset butt hinges are the ideal choice. These specialty hinges have uneven leaves with one side being two inches or an inch and a half longer than the other side. This provides the necessary clearance for smooth operation even in tight spaces, ensuring convenience and practicality.
- For a personalized touch, our blank butt hinges without holes offer versatility and customization. With a clean and minimalist appearance, these hinges allow you to create a unique design aesthetic.
- For a unified fit, our collection also features tapered butt hinges, designed to align doors and cabinets perfectly. These tapered hinges offer a flush appearance, enhancing the overall aesthetic of your projects. Additionally, our hinges with uneven leaves are perfect for compensating variations in door or frame thicknesses, ensuring a secure and proper fit.
- For a sleek and seamless look, our countersunk hinges are the answer to unsightly installs as they prevent the head of the screw from being visible once mounted. They are ideal for flush-mount applications where the leaves of the hinge rest flat. They create a clean and professional finish, adding a touch of elegance to your projects.
What Is a Butt Hinge?
These commonly used hinges or mechanical bearings are comprised of two parallel parts called leaves that are often identical to each other. These parts precisely join together in an approximate 180-degree rotation allowing a smooth opening and closing motion commonly found in doors. The two interwoven leaves on the butt hinge are held together in what’s called a knuckle or a barrel.
A pin runs through the center of the knuckle holding together all of the components of the hinge. In this way, it is often only the rounded knuckle part of the hinge that is viewable when doors are closed. Pins can be removable so the door or other object can be more easily uninstalled if necessary.
In fact, butt hinges differ from other models in that they are made to sit flush against the door or other object to which they are installed. They are typically installed in a recessed or sunken fashion for a tight close. For this reason, closures that require an air-tight seal often use butt hinges over other types.
Butt hinges must also be very strong as they are often the only components that are bearing the weight of the object they are holding. So when you consider the opening and closing of a door, the hinges are responsible for both the exact opening and closing rotation as well as supporting the weight of the door itself. Typically these hinges are mounted with one slide flushed against the doorframe or an immobile fixture and the other side against the door itself or the mobile object.
